On Saturday, March 12
th my baby boy turned two years old.
To celebrate we drove over to Oakland and spent the day at the zoo with Aaron's sister, Gwen, and her family and Grandma Gayla and Grandpa Dave. (I have to warn you that there are a lot of photos of the backs of heads in this post!)
This chimp was using a twig to push a nut out of a hole in that log. There was a zoo worker sitting on a bench outside the exhibit explaining what good tool-makers these animals are and how they're intelligent enough to use what's around them to get food, the way this female was doing.
"Mom, I got a hold of its eyeballs!!"
Finnley learned lots of new words that day. Those animals in the background are "ah-lee-lees". :)
The kids were fascinated with the elephants.
This one had a big branch and was peeling the bark off and eating it.
I could watch the elephants all day.
This boy seemed to be enjoying his birthday pretty well!
This is a
komodo dragon getting a massage. There was a sign sitting on the grass nearby asking visitors to keep their voices down so he could enjoy his massage better!
Just outside the gates of the zoo is this little ride area, which of course we couldn't pass up. The first ride the kids picked was a mini roller coaster. I had to go on it with
Hakan because he isn't quite tall enough to go alone, but that sucker was surprisingly fast!
I couldn't stop laughing at
Hakan's scream, so by the time we got off my eyes were watering like crazy. It really was fun!
There weren't many rides that Finn could do, but a spin on the carousel was good enough for him.
After the zoo we needed to kill some more time, so we headed over to
Ikea then we went to Grandma Anderson's house. The kids spent their time outside hunting for snails and salamanders in her yard.
After a delicious meal we had
Finnley's little party with some cake and ice cream and gifts. He decided to get a taste of Grandma's cake first...
...then just dove right in!
What a funny kid. He eventually got a fork but honestly didn't use it much.
We sure do love this boy. He may be two years old now, but he's still my baby.
